A touch of Versailles in Saxony
The Fasanenschlösschen was built between 1769 and 1782 under Elector Friedrich August III of Saxony. As a private hunting and pleasure palace, it was primarily used for breeding pheasants, which was a popular pastime among the Saxon nobility. The architecture and elegant interior of the palace reflect the French Rococo style and are reminiscent of the playful elegance of Versailles.
The building was designed by the architects Johann Daniel Schade and Johann Gottfried Knöffel. The detailed interior design is particularly impressive, with precious Chinese silk wallpaper and ornate stucco work. The walls are adorned with hand-painted landscape scenes and exotic birds, reminiscent of the palace's former use.
Pheasant breeding, which gave the palace its name, had a long tradition at the Saxon court. Elector Friedrich August III had a large area specially created here for the breeding and keeping of these valuable birds. They were not only prized as a delicacy for festive banquets, but were also kept as lively decorations for court events.
